"A day" that changed Dr. Burke's clinical practice consisted of a college bringing a research topic to her attention. This research topic is called Adverse Childhood Experience Study. This study based on 17,500 children that were exposed to an adverse childhood experience, which consists of: divorce, substance abuse, neglect, and many other reasons. Burke used fight or flight as an example for this study. Dr. Burke compared adverse childhood experiences as to seeing a bear in the woods. In this situation your pupils dilate and your heart begins to race just as a situation an adverse child experiences on a daily basis. When this is experienced this often many other health complications can come into play such as, diabetes, high blood pressure, and even heart disease. According to CDC, "Childhood experiences, both positive and negative, have a tremendous impact on future violence victimization and perpetration, and lifelong health and opportunity." Dr. Burke's goal is to help the children that can and cannot afford these services.

The brain is always present and is capturing good and bad things, and in the future this will affect positively or negatively. I was struck by the illustration in your blog of the bear in the woods, this situation looks terrifying for the first time, every day would be something really disturbing! and would have consequences in the future. That is the kind of adverse situation in children that will have a subsequent consequence. This spontaneous activity of the brain makes it very sensitive to capture experiences that in one way or another are associated with the present of the child. Thanks for your blog!
