Final Blog

During this course we discussed many topics including different parts of the human brain and tasks they perform, the development of ones personality, memory, emotions, physiological disorders, and positive psychology.  The few topics that stood out to me where the human brain and physiological disorders.  I enjoyed this first topic because I was able to do the module task with my coaches daughter and I was able to learn a lot from her.  It was great to experience her learning and having fun with the task as well.  She learned what parts of her brain controlled her speaking and movements.  I enjoyed the physiological disorders section because there are so many things that can be going on in someones brain that you don't know about.  During the in class meeting I really enjoyed the second meeting because we were able to talk about positive Psychology and how simple tasks can make a big difference in the mental state of someones life.  Before taking this ...

Physical Therapy Blog

I decided that I wanted to become a Physical Therapist when I met a little boy through my church, named Ethan.  Ethan's parents moved to Las Vegas From Sir Lanka in order to receive more medical care for their son.  Ethan has been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy.  With this condition he isn't able to maintain function of his upper and lower limbs.  Ethan has never been able sit, walk, crawl, or speak. When I become a Physical Therapist I want to be able to help Ethan and other children like him.  I have been working with Ethan for a little over a year and through rehabilitation he is now able so it up by himself for a few minutes at a time.  One day I also hope to be able to run a nonprofit organization to be able to help special needs kids get more active and feel like normal kids.  I want them to be able to feel like they can participate in any sport that they want to and be apart of multiple teams.

M7 task

For this module task I decided to complete the first option.  Every night before I went to bed for the past week I wrote down three good things that happened to me throughout that day.  I found this task very helpful because even if I felt like I didn't have a lot of good things that happened during my day I was still able to think of something positive for my day.  After focusing on the positive things that happened throughout my day I felt happier before I went to bed.

M6 #3

For this blog I decided to interview two of my family members who suffer from anxiety and depression.  At first I was very nervous to ask my family members to help me with this school assignment because it is very hard to word things the right way to people who suffer from these illnesses.  However, my family was very accommodating and they were able to answer all of the questions that I had.  I have decided not to use names or pictures, but I decided to interview my mom and my uncle.  At the end of these interviews I learned a lot and gained a lot of respect for my mom and uncle. I interviewed my mom first.  She has clinical anxiety and has been overcoming it for over 20 years.  When she experiences a panic attack it mostly happens earn she doesn't have control over a situation. During these attacks she breathes really heavily.  Most of the time she is very good at calming herself down, however it is a lot easier for her to do this if people around ...

#PsychStory

October 1, 2017 is a day that has forever changed my story.   This day has also impacted 58 other families’ directly.   We are all from different parts of the country but together we share one devastation.   We don’t all have the same skin color but we all have the same scaring memories.   We might not all talk the same but we can all communicate our experiences.   We are strong.   We are brave. Through tragedy we have stood and fought back together as one.   We all lean to each other during the hard times.   We all have the same mourning losses.   We are in this fight together.   Our religion doesn’t define our beliefs and our skin does not separate us.   Six months later and we are Vegas Strong.   This task was a lot of fun but at the same time sad.  It brought up feelings and emotions that have been locked away from an experience that happened six months ago.  Its very hard to write about ...

#M3ExpTask

For this experimental task I decided to use my uncle and my cousin.  I decided to use different ages because I thought that it wo uld be interesting to see if the brain that isn't fully developed didn't remember as much as the fully developed brain.  My uncle remembered a total of 13 words altogether from both lists, while my cousin remembered 15 words.  However my uncle remembered the middle last and first words of each list when my cousin could only remember one of the fist words from the first list.  My uncle showed the  “primacy” and “recency” effects.  While I was asking my family members to  remember  these words we sat at the dinner table with no  distractions  while I was reading the words in order to make it easier for them to  remember.  I found it very interesting that my younger cousin got side tracked for a minute but then was still able to continue to write down words as he remembered them.  Neither of m...

Remembering and Forgetting

The video that stood out to me the most was about the different parts of the brain that store memory.  There are three different chambers that store memories in your brain which are called encoder, short term memory, and long term memory.  The encoder is like a passageway that all the information has to go through before it gets to either short term or long term.  Short term memory is very interesting because it is only able to hold 5 to 9 items at a time.  While watching this video the narrator asked the viewers to remember a series of numbers which was very hard.  After realizing you can't remember all these numbers in a row he chucked all the numbers together into dates, and this made it very easy to remember all the numbers.  Long term memory is like a library in your brain but instead of books it contains networks.  Your long term memory consists of everything in your world and yourself. Dr. Ebbinghaus conducted an experiment with himself that c...
